Devisha Poddar

Hi, I’m Devisha!

I have been fascinated with Indian cities and its multiple issues, whether it’s growing garbage dumps, power cuts, contaminated fresh produce, traffic snarls or air pollution. To convert my energies into a productive channel, I have been working in the urban sector for the last 3 years.

Among the multitude of urban issues, I have chosen to work in the field of Food Systems. I am applying for a Masters in Urban/Environment Management and Development beginning this year. My thesis will focus on urban agriculture in light of food security and sustainable healthy diets.  Currently, I am volunteering with Jaivikaran, pioneers of urban farming in Kolkata. Jaivikaran is a family run initiative, we grow microgreens and salad greens in a controlled environment and vacant terraces. Jaivikaran offers fresh and clean produce to Kolkata’s fine dining restaurants, 5 star hotels and we also deliver to customer’s homes. I put on multiple hats, conceptualize events, look after media outreach, blogs and work at the farm.

Previously, I had the opportunity to manage product with Green Communities Foundation in Mumbai. GCF offers end to end solutions for solid waste management at housing complexes, offices and schools. During my tenure, we had initiated waste segregation for residents, housekeeping staff and house staff at more than 30 residential societies and office spaces. The organization set up dry waste collection units and composting processes within the premises of our clients. We also held electronic waste education and collection drives with our clients; we ensured that e-waste was recycled ethically through responsible partners. GCF encourages our clients to maintain kitchen gardens using their own compost. In fact, the office has an organic vegetable patch on the rooftop.

In the past, I have worked with Smart Joules as an energy associate in New Delhi. Smart Joules works on energy efficiency in commercial buildings using artificial intelligence, IOT and retrofits. I created reports for competitive funding, managed communication and conducted research.
